An Albemarle County Circuit Court judge has set aside
a subpoena issued by Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli to the
University of Virginia seeking documents related to the work of climate

What global warming looks like

Nasa GISS summary for July 2010  Link

This last month has seen conditions in western Russia that have never occurred before. In fact nothing even remotely close has ever been recorded. It's not possible to attribute a single incident to anthropogenic global warming. As the GISS summary notes though

What we can say is that global warming has an effect on the probability and intensity of extreme events.

Water wars, part 3.

Well, the big news out of the floods here is that a large dam is in trouble.

Further rainfall and rising water levels threatened Pakistan's third-largest dam as relief officials warned that disease could become the biggest killer in the country's most destructive floods in more than 30 years.

The marching morons

Thanks to JOE the Plumber, the BP oil leak may be fixed

There will be testing over the next few days, but it looks like no more oil is leaking into the Gulf of Mexico, thanks to a "mystery plumber".

Biased and misleading, but generally okay [updated]

The Economist has a piece on the Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency (PBL), which reviewed the IPCC reports.  They found errors and bias, but not enough to warrant the overturning of conclusions.  The summary below.

Most important news of the day is that the gov't just doubledits estimate of the pre-cut & capped flow of oil out of the Macondo

How Not To Stop An Oil Spill: Rayne from FDL

It’s because we want ACTION, not more words. We want the damned well capped and we want it capped yesterday, and no, we don’t want to leave this to a negligent corporation which has consistently failed to act in good faith. We want the Executives we elected to office to execute. Do something, for god’s sake.

The singularity

The singularity? Famed artificial intelligence (AI) researcher and futurist Ray Kurzweil developed the idea in a 2005 book. It's about the ending point of AI development once humans invent an AI system that is more intelligent than us. I'm quoting from an April 2010 paper by philosopher David Chalmers:

Can this be right?

The point in question here.

Last week's killer floods in Tennessee were unusual by almost any measure. (Except for flood-inured Texans who would call 15 inches in rain in two days "a damp weekend".) But, were they so unusual that they would not have happened without global warming?
