Good news in NJ
(#4053)The Supreme Court does the right thing.
This place is my vacation.
An interesting ruling
(#4067)But: as I read this decision, the NJSC has simply punted the issue back to the legislature: presumably with a sort of "pre-clearance" of any same-sex-union legislation they would come up with. So, then (and more learned opinion than mine would be greatly appreciated!): the NJ Legislature can either: legally recognize same-sex marriages; legally recognize same-sex "civil unions"; or legally bar either of the above? Presumably, if they do nothing, the State's "domestic partner" laws stay in place? What are the options here?
More Cut n' Runners
(#4101)Here. Lots more.
Setting aside the obvious -- GOP candidates will talk about Iraq as little as possible if at all in the next two weeks -- this has ramifications for the '08 candidate pool as well. For example, how long will John McCain suggest sending more troops is the way to go? And if he does so, will this cut into his ability to attract the Not-Insane wing of the party?
Time will tell.
“Two clichés make us laugh but a hundred clichés move us, because we sense dimly that the clichés are talking among themselves, celebrating a reunion." - Umberto Eco
Good Point on McCain
(#4107)2 years from now, sending more troops is going to be a pretty tough sell to make. Either things will have gotten better to the point that they are unneeded, or things will have stayed the same or gotten worse-- at which point, assuming we haven't already left, calling for "more troops" would be a sure-fire political loser.
Too bad McCain is too smart to get caught in a "flip-flop" trap ala Kerry. Probably he'll just say things have changed and modify his position to something vaguer, while the media applauds him for straight talkin'.
I'd say McCain has 6 months
(#4112)If he doesn't significantly adjust his Iraq position during that time frame, he's a goner.
Same song, 2nd verse for Hillary. They both have time and options, but not in infinite supply.
I've been on the record...
(#4118)... as saying both sides will run on withdrawal in 2008.
But really, what seems more likely is that some Republican wise men (Warner, Lugar, et al) go visit Bush after the election and say "Mr. President, time's up." If Bush withdraws then McCain will still be credible. He'll just say "The President didn't run the war the way I would have liked him to." But if he doesn't, then either way McCain (or any other Republican candidate) is in a bit of a fix. If he's 'stay the course' or 'build up' in 2008, then that's lethal. If he changes his mind then he loses national security as an issue and is open to the flip-flop charge, but as you indicate, that at least is finessable.
"I don't want us to descend into a nation of bloggers." - Steve Jobs
Makes a lot of sense
(#4315)Although Bush would blow Lugar and Warner off. It would have to be somebody with more clout among conservatives like Ralph Reed or a conservative Senator like Lott, Roberts, Allard or Stephens.
Alternatively, Bush might push back. He is a stubborn little thing. They might wind up having to get Barbara, and I'm not talking about Jenna's sister.
Then again, probably it's Rove who is the real man to convince. In which case look to conservative money men and organizers to make the intervention. Those guys are probably ready to roll, which makes me think your theory just might come to pass.
Bush cares about two things --
(#4346)Being The Decider and looking like a bigger man than his dad.
We aren't withdrawing until after the '08 election, period. A whole lot of people are gonna die for Dubya's daddy complex and our decision to indulge it.
"In the very long run, we are all dead." -- John Maynard Keynes, 1st Baron Keynes
Well, Rove...

The Muslim cabbies refusing to carry alcohol are apparently little more than pawns in a petty power struggle.
But the important question is what kind of organization has a 'fatwa department'? And what does the staff meeting entail? Do they have status updates on previous weeks fatwas, with an expected resolution date? The mind boggles at the combination of the two worst aspects of Muslim and western culture, religous intolerance and meetings.

(#4397)What's your point?
The K Codes explained HERE.
Care to estimate...
(#5464)...how many Asians died at American hands between the time this statement was made and the final fall of Saigon?
By the same token, peace was at hand with the Japanese around December 1942, no?
Me: We! -- Ali
Well, Sure
(#5467)If you employ alternate defintions of 'peace', 'at hand', 'Vietnam' and 'is.'
“Two clichés make us laugh but a hundred clichés move us, because we sense dimly that the clichés are talking among themselves, celebrating a reunion." - Umberto Eco
Above and below. Yep but no alternate definition of peace is
(#5522)necessary, you do what you wish with your hands and Viet Nam is still Viet Nam.
As to what Henry said, "at hand" means its on the way -- not that it's there. North VN had agreed to a cease fire; it came in January of '73, US troops effectively left right after that (end of March IIRC) and Pecae of a sort reigned for a while -- enough for Henry and Le Duc Tho to win the Nobel Peace Prize. Can't knock that without knocking Jimmy... :)
Due to NVN attacks in the south, Thieu restarted hostilities in mid '74, leading to the final Nothern attack in 75.
As to the number of Asians killed by the US between October of 72 and April of 75, most of them were killed during Operation Linebacker, the North said 1,318 -- so figure roughly triple that or about 4K -- why do you ask?
Might have been a whole lot more in late 74-early 75 if the US had not abandoned the south.
December 42 was a bad time. WW II was a different war and politicians were a little -- not a lot -- smarter then and didn't say too many stupid things. Point remains that Henry's statement wasn't all that wrong and I still don't know what Bill's point was.
Either of you guys know?

Hope you can get it working okay.

Obama been politicking
(#5154)Timmy ain't the only one stickin' with Joe Lieberman.
It increasingly appears that the Democratic stalwarts such as Hillary Clinton, John Edwards, Russ Feingold, Barack Obama and even wannabes like Harold Ford Jr. are sticking with Joe as well even if they conceal it and offer a veneer of support to Ned Lamont.
If Joe Lieberman ends up with tipping point control over the US Senate except him to demand concessions from both parties.
I might go so far as to say that if there are 50 Democratic Senators, 49 GOP Senators and Joe Lieberman (plus Dick Cheney for the tie break) Joe Lieberman may become the most powerful man in America for the next two years. Even more so that George Bush as Dubya will be a lame duck.
if Joe is smart (jury out on that) he can play both sides.

The Metaphor. . .
(#5178). . .of a mighty oak tree being struck by lightning--revealing that the tree had long ago rotted at the core and that its majesty had been a mere illusion--comes to mind as I watch Oregon State--a team that had up to now gone a lackluster 4-3 that included a 42-14 stomping at the hands of Boise State--reduce the mighty USC Trojans to a quivering mess in the first three quarters of today's game. Even a theoretical miracle comeback would not salvage the reputation of this Trojans team--they are eliminated from the hunt for the BCS championship as of this moment. . .and there is a local radio guy here in the Portland area who will be looking like the cat who ate the canary come Monday afternoon.

Red drafted the first black NBA player in 1950, fielded the first black starting five in the NBA and hired the first black coach, Bill Russell. Along the line he traded stars for the draft rights to Russell, nobodies so he could draft Larry Bird, won over 900 games and 8 titles a coach and 8 more as an executive. He was funny, sarcastic, brilliant, blunt, competitive and a basketball genius. He has a staue of him sitting on a bench at Fanueil Hall in Boston that is a big tourist attraction. His victory cigar is one of the enduring celebrations in American sport.

Halloween question. For 40 years, I've been asking my
(#6171)wife to buy nothing but bags of little Hershey's, Peanut Butter Cups and Milky Ways (package 1) -- stuff we'll eat if there aren't a huge number of kids.
For all that period, including this year, to humor me she routinely has bought one or two bags like that, teeny ones, the smallest she can find -- and four of five really huge bags of Zzoopy Taffy, Ssliag Ssuckers, Globber Mintz and other stuff (package 2) no one ever heard of -- or wants. Thus we always end up with no package 1 stuff left over and half a ton of package 2 stuff.
Anyone need any Zzoopy Taffy? Snack size bags of glodfish? Free shipping...
My question is... Why?
