On Chuck Schumer

Sure he's a good Democrat. He voted against Clinton's impeachment + held Gonzales's feet to the fire over firing Democratic USAs. But what's he done for the general voter lately?

Blocked legislation that would've regulated Fannie May + Freddie Mac, shot off his mouth re: IndyMac, and facillated Mukasey's AG confirmation.

He sucks. Vote for Mark Greene or somebody else next time.

Schumer is Mr. Potter without the Barrymore good looks. (#103046)
by tomsyl

Schumer's latest excuse on the IndyMac failure: He's just the bearer of bad news.

And now they are doing what the Bush administration always does: Blame the fire on the person who calls 911..

Virtually everything Schumer said in his "don't blame me" press conference was patently false.

Anyone in Congress who doesn't know what a bank run is or how it gets triggered doesn't belong in Congress, and certainly not on the Banking Committee. Is Schumer saying he could not have called OTS for account without issuing a press release first? How did the entirely predictable run and its consequences help depositors, federal insurers, OTS or us taxpayers? Hasn't he even watched It's a Wonderful Life?

And calling OTS "the Bush administration" is sophistry imo. They're the same impossible PITAs to deal with as they have been in every administraion since the original S&L crisis, and I doubt the outcome would have been any different under a Democratic president. Bankers fear them more than a typical business would fear a multi-year IRS audit. Schumer must've thought OTS wouldn't have the nerve to criticise him personally.

Wait a minute, isn't this the same clown who took credit for increasing the ability of the OTS to rein in S&Ls because he didn't want any more bank failures?

To top it off, Schumer literally defines what a sh!t-eating grin looks like.

Schumer Had Better Watch His Back (#103066)

After the debacle of her campaign, HRC probably wouldn't mind having "senior Senator from New York" added to her resume as she plots a comeback.

Oh--and you have an open italics tag after It's a Wonderful Life, Tomsyl. :-)

He also... (#102917)

Helped block legislation to tax hedge fund managers pay at normal instead of capital gains rates. He's totally in the pocket of Wall Street.

On the plus side, he's did run the DSCC when the Dems managed to get the senate in 2006, a feat which nobody could have comfortably predicted.

Right, he's a good Democrat (#102919)

All politicians suck (#102916)
by Chuchundra

Some just suck less than others.

I have no great love for Schumer. He's more than a bit of a weasel. On the other hand, he did defeat Senator "Pot hole" Al D'Amato, so he has my undying gratitude for that, if for nothing else.

His suckitude has gone too far IMO (#102918)

We can't have anti-reg, establishment Ds around anymore.

Schumer stopped Republican lawmakers (at the urging of Randian Alan Greenspan) from regulating GSEs.

He's not the only one of course, but he's a good high-profile D target for drawing the line.

Would you rather have (#102930)
