Here we go again
Ike is a CAT4 and look where it's headed.
Perhaps Cuba will knock it down a bit but then it's got time to strengthen again. Look for more oil market gyrations next week.

That being said, and while I completely disagree with him, he is smarter than me, (you just have to bite that bullet sometimes), and he'll know this stuff...
I think hurricanes were down last year, but this seasons seems to be shaping up to be very, very difficult.
I was in South Florida after Andrew....and Hurricanes pack an enormous amount of energy and a staggering amount of destructive power.

)at least compared to the 80's and 90's. But I'm not aware of any research linking that to AGW. Instead it may be the consequence of the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation. There is quite a bit of research indicating that the intensity of hurricanes may be linked to AGW but the case there is by no means closed.

| parent )The facts speak for themselves.
The hurricane season exists because the Atlantic waters are warmer in the summer.
We have measured Atlantic temperatures and seen that they have gotten warmer in recent years.
It doesn't take a rocket scientist (or a climatologist) to deduce a causal relationship.

| parent )but another factor that influences hurricane intensity is wind shear that may be affected differently by global warming. So it's not a perfect casual relationship.

| parent )....I can't really buy either of your postulates above. I'd simply note that even very strong supporters of GWT can come up with models that produce very counter-intuitive results, like more snow in Antarctica or, in the event of a shutdown of the Gulf Stream, a much chillier Europe. In the face of that, your call to draw a nice, simple conclusion by taking everything at face value looks obscurantist.
