Palins executive experience

As part of Sarah Palins vast executive experience Karl Rove claimed that she was the mayor of the second largest city in Alaska. Thats a little bit of an exaggeration as noted by John Stewart here

but she was the mayor of Wasilla. How did she do in the job? That noted liberal rag the Rupert Murdoch owned Wall Street Journal has an article here that shows a little of what Sarah can do in an executive role.

The key paragraph from the article

The only catch was that the city began building roads and installing utilities for the project before it had unchallenged title to the land. The misstep led to years of litigation and at least $1.3 million in extra costs for a small municipality with a small budget. What was to be Ms. Palin's legacy has turned into a financial mess that continues to plague Wasilla.

The spin on this should be entertaining. Fire away!

Screwy deal (#117403)

The city should sue its own attorneys for malpractice. All this stuff is executed by legal counsel, and signatures and recordings are the final steps in perfecting these agreements. I know how these eminent domain transactions work, both in friendly and in unfriendly situations.

The attorneys (#117492)
by Floater

are not the ones who sign the documents though. If you do have experience in this area you know that and she should have known it also since she had been the mayor for several years already.

You're right, the attorneys don't sign the documents, (#117586)
by Bird Dog

but it doesn't take away from the fact that the attorneys are the ones who draft the legal documents and that it is their responsibility to protect the city's legal interests. This looks like a fairly obviously case of malpractice. As for Palin knowing whether or which documents should be signed, you and I don't know if she had been involved in prior eminent domain cases. The deal with the Nature Conservancy occurred in 1996 or 1997, her first or second year as mayor.

Accountability always does seem to somehow miss Republican officeholders.

It's impossible to debate if people simply hold beliefs that have no grounding in reality.

As mayor (#117608)

it was Sarah Palin's job to protect the city's interests. All of them. Blaming it on the attorneys doesn't cut it. I'm certainly not surprised that you're trying to blame others for her failures though.

Heh! I think I shall simply print out that WSJ piece (#117245)

and send a copy to all of the GOP precinct captains in my vicinity.

Most of them are professionals -- bankers, doctors, lawyers -- and they routinely complain about the incompetence of our local governments.

when school districts are saddled with legal costs due to silly attempts at defending creationism there's an ideological reason behind it.

This is simple ineptitude. This is the kind of thing the Democrats should use to attack the GOP ticket.

This place is my vacation.

Ouch! (#117235)

That's nearly $1,500 in legal expenses per citizen.

Those citizens also get $3000+ in a yearly check just for living there.

So, they're still ahead of the game. ;-)
