Have House Democrats finally grown a spine?
It seems House Democrats decided to ignore the lying from the Bush administration and its allies about how the expiration of the Protect America Act means that terrorists win and stood strong for once.
Will this last? I have my doubts. But it is a step forward.

)I dunno what I would do if the office of the president was telling me to do something and it's ok, oh and by the way they have a record for vindictiveness and we have a few billion of business with the feds.
At the same time, for precedent's sake, they need to take a fine. Sucks that they were given a trick question.

)I see two problems. First, the trick question you acknowledge. The idea that the federal govt is going to fine an institution for doing the federal govt's bidding strikes me as problematic. Second, I presume that the victims of the telecoms are also the customers who will ultimately be the ones paying the fine in one way or the other.

| parent )"The federal government" is divided into three parts, and not in the Trinitarian sense. The judicial branch most certainly should fine a corporation for contravening the laws of the legislative branch, whether or not the executive branch twisted said corporation's arm.
Of course, if you really feel strongly that the government is the criminal party here, we could always substitute it as a defendant. (Another advantage of the separation of powers is that the government can hear cases against itself.) That amendment was proposed as well, but whaddya know, it was shot down and every single Senate Republican voted against it.

It will be interesting to see what BushCo will do next to protect the telecoms from the impending lawsuits. Perhaps they will simply issue a Nixon-like pardon for the "good" of the country.
