Since I'm too lazy to go find one, I'll just start a new one.
Interesting link stolen from NRO, Art Garfunkel has a list of every book he's read since 1968
Intriguing on a few different levels. It'd be interesting to compare his reading at a particular time with his coincident music.

Hey Guys, just wanted to remind you that I'll be at the Old Town Bar tonight, 45 E 18th Street, and due to some stuff I have to do with my folks I'll be there between 7 and 8 PM. Don't bother responding to this, I won't see it until I get back to Seattle.
BTW, life without the internet is strangely relaxing. Even Republicans seem less obnoxious.

)Great meeting all you guys who made it tonight (plus Hank's buddies). We should get together again sometime this summer (us plus anyone else who can make it next time).
For those who didn't make it: We came up with perfect solutions to all the world's problems, but we ain't tellin'.

* I actually like Biden. He would have been my top choice among the Democratic candidates for president. Sometimes seems a little odd in terms of personality, although less so than in the past, but he's a smart, insightful, pragmatic guy.

OH! NOW it makes sense to me. I was really puzzled when I heard you guys announce that solution last night. The bar was loud, and I couldn't hear you all that well, and I didn't realize you said that the alternative energy solution was "cornish game hens". I thought you said the solution was "pornish gay mens".* Which I found confusing and a little disturbing...not that there's anything wrong with that.
* not really. just making sh-t up.

Of course, a lot of that is due to the Diamondbacks' collapse in recent weeks, but the Dodgers' 46-49 record really isn't that bad under the circumstances.* If they can get Furcal back in September and the pitching holds up a bit better than it has, they might well slip into the playoffs for at least a round.
*--and yes, Juan Pierre--though he has been a little more selective at the plate this season--has been just as bad as I anticipated. What I *hadn't* anticipated, is that Andruw Jones--who hit 51 home runs and had an adjusted OPS+ of 136 as recently as 2005--would be far, far worse. Fortunately, the kids that the brain trust in the LA baseball media led by Bill Plaschke have been trying to chase out of town have been compensating for the failures of the veterans.

)Greg Maddux hasn't won a game in two months, thanks to the anemic support from his Padres teammates, but he still managed to make history tonight: he stole second base in the third inning of tonight's game with the Braves to become--at the age of 42 years and 89 days--the oldest pitcher to ever steal a base. Maybe next time they'll know to hold the old timer on first. :-)

)Tao Te Ching,
Chapter 66:
Why is the sea king of a hundred streams?
Because it lies below them.
Therefore it is the king of a hundred streams.
If the sage would guide the people, he must serve with humility.
If he would lead them, he must follow behind.
In this way when the sage rules, the people will not feel oppressed;
When he stands before them, they will not be harmed.
The whole world will support him and will not tire of him.
Because he does not compete, he does not meet competition.
Chapter 67:
Everyone under heaven says that my Tao is great and beyond compare.
Because it is great, it seems different.
If it were not different, it would have vanished long ago.
I have three treasures which I hold and keep.
The first is mercy;
the second is economy;
The third is daring not to be ahead of others.
From mercy comes courage;
from economy comes generosity;
From humility comes leadership.
Nowadays men shun mercy, but try to be brave;
They abandon economy, but try to be generous;
They do not believe in humility, but always try to be first.
This is certain death.
Mercy brings victory in battle and strength in defense.
It is the means by which heaven saves and guards.

)I've been waiting for an open thread to comment on something that's been puzzling me. It involves psychology, physics, biology and mathematics.
I've had a cat for several years. (I think he's about 8 years old, but I'm not sure since he's basically a rescue) A couple of weeks ago I took in a cat who had been living a lousy existence in the basement of a restaurant (very neglected, and showing it). They are both males, in case that matters.
ok, here's the thing.
I would think that if my cat, Buddy, continued to eat and drink the same amount as always, as seems to be the case, and the new cat, Pancho, eats and drinks an equal amount, which also seems to be the case, then the godd*mn frickin' litter box would fill up only twice as fast. But rather than the amount of poopage and piss doubling, it seems to have expanded exponentially! I can't keep up with these dudes! I'd say maybe it's some kind of contest between them (literally a pissing [and pooping] contest), which would be a psychological dynamic, but how can it be possible over time for them to be generating more mass than they are taking in? No, neither is losing weight or seems unhealthy in any way (so no dehydration). So what I'm left with is a violation of the law of conservation of matter!!! I'm reminded of what Joe Pesci argued starting at 4:39 in this video: "Perhaps the laws of pysics cease to exist [in my cats' litter box]!"

)And as any longtime catowner can tell you, all the rules of psychology, physics and biology tend to get just a bit looser when those of the feline persuasion are involved.
I think the rules of mathematics still apply: but every time I bring it up with my cats, they seem not to understand - although I'm sure (like with everything else) they know more than they like to let on...

| parent )I owned a Russian Blue during the 1990's that could be best described as "evil" as far as general personality traits went. He had no fear of other cats--I often saw him standing off cats twice and more his size (he weighed 8-9 pounds when he was young) with no sign of fear, but there was a little dog belonging to the next door neighbors that he loved to torment from the other side of the fence, but on the few occasions that dog got out of his yard, my cat ran like a Hellhound was after him and waited atop the large Yucca in our yard until the dog was retrieved and put back in the neighbors' yard. I'm fairly certain my cat could have reduced that dog to bloody shreds in a fair fight, and yet--he ran. Odd.

| parent )Great Dane -- COOL!
By the way, I'm even more a dog person than a cat person. I'm constantly stopping people on the street (here in Manhattan) and petting their dogs and talking about them and their breed, or trying to guess the mix if it's a mix. And I drag my poor girlfriend to dog runs on weekends just so I can "meet" a lot of dogs and their owners. I don't want to have a dog while I'm living in the city, so I get my fix from other people's dogs.

gaping maw of idiocyarticle was "maybe the dumbest column [he's] ever written," but then to go on, in said podcast, to suggest to James Blake that what Wimbledon really needs is a center court with a retractable roof when center court will be adding a retractable roof this coming year?At this point, it's just funny.
(On a related note, Kamashki Tandon had written a rebuttal to Simmons' sustained brain fart on the ESPN website, but I guess ESPN decided it just couldn't have BS criticized--a link for the rebuttal shows up as a search result, but the piece itself has been removed. Awesome.)
