The Manchurian Candidate

Hi! How's it going?

When you saw this diary title, who did you assume it was going to be about, and why did you assume that? Or any other insights.

Just curious.

Cheers

whether you were going to be defending McCain from charges that he's a Manchurian Candidate, or attacking Obama for being one.

The other day I heard that ignorance and apathy are sweeping the country. I didn't know that, but I don't really care.

which take-out joint you'd picked.

Though I should have known better than to think this joint would spring for lunch.

Obama, as in his middle name (#111555)

Obama, as in his middle name and the silly, weasely implications by those who use it.

But then, after seeing the Google stats in Brendan's comment, it occurred to me that some could see a connection to (former POW) McCain.

By the way, the remake wasn't nearly as good as the original.

Oh, and I think the guy who played the McCarthy figure was later on the cast of Barney Miller, which brings me back to...I met Abe Vigoda last Sunday!

I have to disagree with this comment. (#111558)

The remake wasn't "not nearly as good." It was a total piecer, an abomination. It was dreadful. :)

...which matches his acting abilities. However we've got Joe Hamm, from "Mad Men" as the lead human, so it might be worth a look. I'm interested in the re-write.

To see who you were writing about. I've read enough of your material to conclude that I shouldn't make assumptions.

What do I win?

Just kidding. Coming from you, I assumed it would be a clever ploy designed to tease out our prejudices so that you could jump out from the shadows all Socrates and go Ah ha! Your thinking's all warped by partisan nonsense!

Just kidding again. I assumed it was something about how people think Obama is secretly a Muslim radical in cahoots with William Ayers and this will (and should) cost him the election. My bad...that diary is one up from yours.

Obama of course.. (#111511)

because I have heard that epitaph used against him in many arguments with right wing commentors on other sites.

Of course when I ask them to tell me WHO made him one...the answers vary (the Muslims, the Commies( they are so pleased to fall back to that old comfy cold war stalwart, it's so much easier than the nebulous Muslim threat), the "hard left", did I mention the Muslims?"..but they are dead cert that he IS the Manchurian Candidate.

I once worked very briefly for Nader (I was an early 'Common Cause' staffer and he used our offices), and I can personally testify that he is the puppet of Fu Manchu.

BTW, I got to know several of the Brides pretty well. They were bored and restless and new in town, and I was fresh out of high school and waiting to be drafted. You know how it goes. Ah, how youth is wasted on the young...

I didn't know anyone read them still. A reminder from my youth, thanks!

I have a dozen or so of them as e-books. If you like I can email them to you. I also seem to have rather a lot of Ernest Bramahs, Oppenheimers, Wheatleys, Charterises, etc in that form. Let me know if you're interested.

Reading e-books on a PC screen can be annoying. I use a utility called 'Ybook' that emulates the pages of a paperback. For some reason this really works.

K, I would never pass up this one! (#112083)

Where I am, I only get to view comments sporadically via a dialup (except when I occasionally get the luxury of broadband).

It is extremely kind of you to offer me these books, which I also want to introduce to my kids (not that they seem particularly interested).

Is this Charteris the Leslie Charteris of the Saint that you mention? Yes please, if so! My wife will be completely bemused by such juvenilia of course.
