On Sambos, Bitches & Artic Arabs
We all know the media is out to destroy Sarah Palin. In her own acceptance speech, Palin told the adoring crowd that she cares only what the people think, not the media. So what do ordinary Alaskans have to say about Ms. Palin?
Alaskans Speak (In A Frightened Whisper): Palin Is “Racist, Sexist, Vindictive, And Mean”
“So Sambo beat the bitch!”
This is how Republican Vice Presidential nominee Sarah Palin described Barack Obama’s win over Hillary Clinton to political colleagues in a restaurant a few days after Obama locked up the Democratic Party presidential nomination.
According to Lucille, the waitress serving her table at the time and who asked that her last name not be used, Gov. Palin was eating lunch with five or six people when the subject of the Democrat’s primary battle came up. The governor, seemingly not caring that people at nearby tables would likely hear her, uttered the slur and then laughed loudly as her meal mates joined in appreciatively.
“It was kind of disgusting,” Lucille, who is part Aboriginal, said in a phone interview after admitting that she is frightened of being discovered telling folks in the “lower 48” about life near the North Pole.
Then, almost with a sigh, she added, “But that’s just Alaska.”
Racial and ethnic slurs may be “just Alaska” and, clearly, they are common, everyday chatter for Palin.
Besides insulting Obama with a Step-N’-Fetch-It, “darkie musical” swipe, people who know her say she refers regularly to Alaska’s Aboriginal people as “Arctic Arabs” – how efficient, lumping two apparently undesirable groups into one ugly description – as well as the more colourful “mukluks” along with the totally unimaginative “f**king Eskimo’s,” according to a number of Alaskans and Wasillians interviewed for this article.

I guess it should come as no surprise that a man who would call a woman, let alone his wife, a "cu*t" in public, would select as his running mate a woman who makes Dick Nixon look like Ghandi. This kind of bigotry and racism cost George Allen his senate seat. Hopefully it will cost Palin any chance at the Vice-Presidency.

| parent )Such a charming turn of phrase (insert roll eyes emoticon).
If memory serves one has to be 1/4 to actually considered for enrollment.
Though he does have honourable Yu'pik heritage.
And while, for example, Kevin Costner has an equal amount of Cherokee blood, I do not see him referred to as a Cherokee.
The same with Todd Palin. I've noticed he's lately acquired an extra 1/8th making him 1.4 on some sites on the tubes, but it is his mother who is 1/4. According to newspaper reports from AK when the Mrs. was elected Gov.
I was curious and looked him up, because I love the Yu'pik..that's the region I spend my best times in AK in. A number of the Yu'pik salmon fishermen during the Bristol Bay runs actually speak the language in their radio communications. With the occasional English word like "hamburger" thrown in. My dream retirement place would be Ugashik Bay. :)
Pedantic I know.

| parent )....discussion was to get at whether Palin has a racial bias against Eskimos. If we're to believe that similar attitudes obtain as in the unreconstructed Old South, then one drop of Yu'pik blood would be one drop too many. It certainly wouldn't make for a marriage. Just sayin'.

We aren't talking about the South are we? There's a different set of racial prejudices and degress up there. A correlation to Native Americans down here is more correct.
Using Kevin Costner again. He has the same amount of Native blood as Todd Palin. Now if Costner got drunk, you wouldn't hear all the horrible racial slurs about his 1/8th Cherokee blood. Now if a full blood Cherokee went and got really drunk, all the nasty old chestnuts come out. My example some diaries back also refers to this. No white woman, or one with 1/8th native blood, in Alaska who has a drinking problem will be called an "Eskimo Princess".

| parent )who aren't typical, since they have a fair bit of oil under their lands, and none at all with native people of the far north. That said, there's some tension between the Osage and the white people. Case in point: in Osage County, the tribe can start drilling in your front yard and there's nothing you can do about it. As a consequence, the whites just won't live in Osage County and the towns are dying. The Tallgrass Prairie reserve is tough to photograph because half the decent vistas have wellheads in the frame. To further complicate things, the Osage women I know (the women speak using a different grammar than the men, so to study the language you have to listen to women) complain their men don't work. They live off oil revenue and go down to Bartlesville and drink all day.
Are there cultural tensions between the native peoples and the whites in Alaska? I know a teeny little bit about the Court Oreilles of northern Wisconsin: the white fishermen complain that the Court Oreilles get to spearfish for walleyes in the shallows during the spawn.

There isn't enough time to talk about that here.
But here's a little tid-bit that doesn't have to do with Salmon.
The Makah have won a share of the hake fishery. The treaty allowed them to fish as their share according to their "traditional means". They have some great lawyers, because now they are fishing their share using large trawlers and gigantic nets. I find it amusing more than anything. because hake was not a target fishery in the traditional manner..it wasn't feasible. They are terrible to eat plain (the PNW hake have an enzyme that makes them the mushiest fish on the planet) and until technology began to advance in the past tow or three decades they weren't even a viable fishery for non-tradiotnal means..like trawlers and nets.
The Russians and Bulgarians and others used to fish for them off our shores, but they had processors right one board. And the USSR wasn't known for quality in it's seafood, for it's own people anyway.
Sorry for all the digressions..it's just I am in familiar territory here.

The degree seems to be inflating over the past few weeks.
One has to be 1/4 I think. It may be less, but I don't think so. Certainly the granchildren of a full blooded native are entitled to enrollment and the benefits of that enrollment.
An interesting aside, for me anyway, is the heavy Russian influence out west and Kodiak. A lot of the native Alaskans have Russian surnames and a few of the old grannies still speak Russian around Kodiak, anyway. Before the fall of the USSR there were only three Russian Orthodox seminaries in the world. One was on Kodiak Island. All the little villages have their onion dome churches. Lovely buildings.

I'm not banned yet. But I'm sure it could happen. I don't even know if this has merit. If someone wants to know if Palin has used a racial slur, look for "Eskimo Princess"...sounds innocent, but is loaded beyond belief. I know her husband is 1/8th Yu'pik, but I'd be interested to know what her relations with the natives she fishes around are.
And before anyone charges in here accusing me of racism for mentioning the phrase "eskimo princess", I am a registered tribal back east, more than Todd Palin. I used the phrase, because when I think of racism in Alaska, it isn't white on black as much as white on native.
I'm withholding judgment..I've been a waitress dependent on the job. Honestly, I can absolutely see this. Palin doesn't have a problem with someone being called a bitch. What she might have said in the cozy confines of her home turf, who knows.

A whole lot of people haven't realized that the great reason for the successes that the GOP does enjoy electorally is not being dirty. It's having a candidate say happy, friendly things to reassure the fence sitters of the electorate while at the same time having folks who have enough plausible deniability spewing the worst sort of hate and lies. My adopted daughter was maybe seven at the time, still a doubting, fearful little creature, barely spoke English, this must have been a few months after she came up to the States. She'd never known her real Dad, and we both had some issues getting used to the arrangement, for I had never been a Dad before, either.
Well, she did something wrong and I had to do some minor course correction. I remember telling her: "If you tell me what you do wrong, before I find out about it, I will never get angry at you, remember, I'm your Dad now, and I'm supposed to be on your side."
"Really?" she asked me, incredulous. "Oh, sure" I said, "I expect everyone fails sometimes, I know I do. But I always tell people when bad things happen, especially at work, so it's never a surprise to them. Oh they won't like it, but they can't accuse me of lying about it, or covering it up, and it's much better for me, because that tells them I take responsibility for what I do."
So she unburdened herself of half a dozen minor infractions, all quite petty, just crying her eyes out. It was a tender moment. We got off to a pretty good start.
The truth will set you free, but first it puts you through the wringer.

| parent )Lord, it sure is funny watching a man who's just caved in to every Repub special interest, most especially the Christian Taliban.
Talk about being a Maverick. McCain looks a lot like Musharraf these days: talking tough, doing nothing, getting caught out in a zillion panders. Let's not even talk about the free use of Budweiser corporate aircraft, he's obviously learned nothing from his Keating 5 scandal.
Let's just put it baldly, McCain can run on his record all seven days of the week and the Dems will punish him with his every utterance. There's only one consistent aspect to the McCain / Palin campaign: the lies. Obama will lower taxes. He'll lower taxes on capital gains, he'll lower taxes for 95% of the taxable persons. Yet still this lie is repeated, over and over.
There's also the lie about Iraq to manage. Bill O'Reilly was bushwhacked into admitting the Iraqis haven't held up their end of the bargain -- have you seen the tape? Billo got hornswoggled. Obama managed the Iran issue with aplomb and style, saying he's not going to tip his hand.
Here's how Obama's going to manage these lies: he'll take them straight to the right wing pundits, doing to them what he's presently doing to O'Reilly.
As for Palin, she's already shot herself in the foot. Let Palin go out to repeat these idiotic lies, over and over, but never grant an interview. The Dems will turn to the Sabbath Gasbags and push her arguments into the wood chipper. Brrrrzzz! There goes Palin the Pawn. Now that McCain has picked her, he's stuck with her. She might as well have a set of concentric rings painted on her ass: the Dems have eviscerated her type on the mainland. She might be a hunter, but she's no soldier. destroying her is simple: lure her into an ideological kill zone and cut her to pieces with her own bumptious utterances. If Palin won't talk to the press, so be it. We will, and we'll take our arguments to the source: the right wing pundits themselves.
