Rangel's Sweetheart Deal
Apparently, not only did Rangel forget to report offshore income to the IRS, he also got a sweetheart deal, a no interest mortgage. The no interest mortgage may very well explain why the IRS is after him.
With his New York real estate problems combined with his offshore holdings and related tax problems, Mr. Rangel, chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee is in a spot of trouble. More than likely, Charlie is going to become the Congressional Poster Boy for the GOP in the upcoming election. A Pelosi Corruption scandal should prove interesting.
In any event, Rangel must represent the "special interests" McCain and Palin are going to go after when they are elected in November.
Mr. Rangel’s lawyer, Lanny Davis, said that the congressman’s accountant believed that Mr. Rangel would not owe federal taxes on the unreported income because the income would be offset by a deduction for depreciation and a credit for the taxes the resort owner paid to the Dominican government on the rental income.
I believe that Lanny hasn't focused on the tax consequences of a no interest mortgage bta I could be wrong. But his failure to file correct Congressional Financial Disclosure Forms will probably end his career.
One last thought, if Rangel had been a Republican, the article's opening would have been Representative Charles B. Rangel (R-NY). So as not to confuse you, Rangel is a democrat.
