● I didn't see Obama's speech in Jerusalem, but I just read it. It's pretty good. Here's the part that stood out for me.

Too Many Black Swans Open Thread...

Nassim Nicholas Taleb is the modern (2004) author of Black Swan theory:

"What we call here a Black Swan (and capitalize it) is an event with the following three attributes. First, it is an outlier, as it lies outside the realm of regular expectations, because nothing in the past can convincingly point to its possibility. Second, it carries an extreme 'impact'. Third, in spite of its outlier status, human nature makes us concoct explanations for its occurrence after the fact, making it explainable and predictable."

Mr Krauthammer in 2008 on Mr Bush.  What I like especially is highlighted.

In the hour I spent with the president (devoted mostly to foreign policy), that equanimity was everywhere in evidence -- not the resignation of a man in the twilight of his presidency but a sense of calm and confidence in eventual historical vindication.

Nice catch.

A former spokesman for al-Qaeda and son-in-law of its founder, Osama bin Laden, was captured overseas and secretly brought to New York this month to face a criminal trial for allegedly conspiring to kill Americans, U.S. officials said Thursday.

A Few Questions for You Lawyers

I am not seeking legal advice. You are not my lawyer.

I just completed six days on a jury as an alternate in a criminal trial. I heard all the testimony. I did not participate in deliberations.

The jury met for ~6 hours before deciding they were deadlocked and nothing the court nor the attorneys could do or say would help to clear the impasse. I was released back to the real world a couple of hours ago.

Hugo Chavez's Economic Legacy

There will be plenty of negative commentary on Chavez in the US press (and after reflecting on the recent Malaysia scandal, I wonder how much of that will be directly financed by Venezuela's Chamber of Commerce, Fedecameras, which headed the conservative opposition to CHavez).

So this is just a brief diary seeking to counterbalance likely negative news and support the proposition that Chavez was in fact a highly successful leader if we judge success in terms of leaving the people of Venezuela much better off than when he took power.

Open Thread - Music For Your Sequester Denial

I don't know about you, but I'm attempting to blot out the sequester and the sociopaths in the GOP and Democratic Party who designed this little fiscal cherry bomb, and who are playing politics with the well-being of American workers and families.

To that end, here's a soulful tune, so soulful it feels like you've always been singin it:

Sometimes we look on the USA from the outside and wonder - are you guys nuts?  Why should you want to live with drones buzzing around?  Or not buzzing, which seems worse.

State of the Union Open Thread

What do you want the president to say (and presumably follow up on) in the SOTU speech?

What would you like to talk about in an open thread?

Either question can be answered in the friendly space Hank's provided below.
