This is speculative but, to me, the Obama legacy is going to be about four things: (1) the stimulus bill, (2) Obamacare, (3) a black guy (with Hussein for a middle name, even) got elected to the highest office in the land, and (4) no other accomplishments of any import.
This second term is a Seinfeld presidency. It's a show about nothing, and Obama is not helping himself. Last week, Obama's talk about NSA was somewhere between misleading and mendacious, further illustrating how liberals got chumped. On surveillance, Obama said one thing as a Senator and did something else as president. By redefining "relevance", the administration is justifying the mass warrantless collection of records:
As the EPIC brief makes clear, the government’s practice of collecting data on hundreds of billions of calls each year and then later, unilaterally, deciding what is actually relevant (fewer than 300 last year) is not permitted by section 215. Moreover, given the scope of material covered by section 215, if it were permitted, it would allow the government to sweep up almost any data on the basis that some of it might prove relevant later. For example, the argument, if accepted, would allow the government to seize billions of medical records or book or library records without a warrant—the textbook definition of an unconstitutional fishing expedition. The White Paper’s attempt to disavow this possibility boils down to: trust us. Here is the legalese: “This conclusion does not mean that the scope of Section 215 is boundless and authorizes the FISC to order the production of every type of business record in bulk—including medical records or library or book sale records, for example,” the White Paper notes. “Although there could be individual contexts in which the Government has an interest in obtaining medical records or library records for counterterrorism purposes, these categories of data are not in general comparable to communications metadata as a means of identifying previously unknown terrorist operatives or networks.” In other words, we don’t think bulk collection of medical records is necessary to stop terrorism, but if we did, we could collect it.
Mere days after pledging to bring in a group of outside experts to conduct an independent review of surveillance policy, Obama broke it by picking DNI Clapper to form the group, an Obama man who lied to Congress, excising the words "outside" and "independent" from the order.
On the WAMI, the Obama decision to close multiple embassies borders on the ridiculous, as Larry Johnson explains:
Where was it going to happen? Well, they did not quite know that.
What were the terrorists going to do? Obama and team did not quite know that either. Could be a bomb, could be ambush, could be a wet fart on a crowded airplane. But goddamn it, it was “SPECIFIC.”
And what was Obama’s courageous response? He demanded that 22 Embassies be closed.
What else was the community organizer of Chicago supposed to do? Well, let me tell you what a someone who knows something about command would do.
For starters, you go to the host nation and demand they increase the security perimeter around the Embassy. Then, assuming you actually have “specific” intelligence worth a damn (you know, something about the the particular device or the technique), you share it with the host government so that they can move proactively against the individuals and groups most likely to carry out such an attack. You step up your proactive military and intelligence measures (but you do this quietly, without public fanfare.)
You also could bolster your own security personnel at the Embassy. Reinforce the Marine Security guards, deploy personnel from the theater CIFs.
What do the weak and the incompetent do? They cut and run. That’s Barack Obama.
We now also have more evidence that the billions we are spending on intelligence may be a waste of money. Despite the insistence by Obama and his team that terrorists would strike at the end of Ramadan, this turned out to be true in only one place–IRAQ!
In Iraq, however, the target was not Americans. Nope. SUNNI extremists, the Al Qaeda guys, attacked and murdered Iraqi Shia civilians.
Also not improving are the skills of the Diplomat-in-Chief.
On the domestic front, a federal appeals court ruled that the Obama administration flouted federal law. So much for faithfully executing the laws of the land. This is an administration that executes some laws and ignores the ones Obama doesn't like. This ruling may have application to Obamacare, given the waivers and delays the administration has administered so far.
Of course, there are many defenses and defenders of Obama's performance, but he could without the Big Douchebag in his corner.
